The Tampa Bay Rays have made yet another move, trading All-Star third baseman Isaac Paredes to the Chicago Cubs, sources confirmed on Sunday. In exchange for Paredes, the Rays will receive infielder Christopher Morel, as well as right-handed pitching prospects Ty Johnson and Hunter Bigge.

Paredes, only 25 years old, has already experienced multiple trades throughout his young career. Initially acquired by the Tigers from the Cubs at the 2017 Trade Deadline, he spent time in the big leagues with Detroit before being traded to Tampa Bay for Austin Meadows just days before the start of the 2022 season.

During his time with the Rays, Paredes has truly blossomed into a standout player, earning himself All-Star recognition. Known for his unusual offensive profile, Paredes showcased his power-hitting ability by hitting 67 home runs in his first 350 games with the team. Furthermore, all of his first 69 Major League home runs were hit to left or left-center field, a testament to his proficiency as a pull-side power hitter.

With guidance from Tampa Bay's hitting coach Chad Mottola and the Rays' coaching staff, Paredes has combined his pull-side power strategy with a disciplined approach and improved bat-to-ball skills. This transformation has allowed him to not only hit home runs but also employ a two-strike approach that enables him to deliver hits to the opposite field, particularly with runners in scoring position.

While Paredes excels at the plate, he also brings versatility to the field. Though primarily a third baseman this season, he is capable of playing first and second base if necessary. Paredes is currently in his first year of arbitration eligibility, earning $3.4 million, and he will remain under the Rays' control until the end of the 2027 season.

This trade comes as a bit of a surprise, as it is uncommon for Tampa Bay to part ways with a young and productive player who still has many years of club control remaining. However, it is worth noting that the Rays have their top prospect, Junior Caminero, waiting in the wings in Triple-A, projecting to be a third baseman at the Major League level.

In acquiring Paredes, the Cubs gain an accomplished player who has already proven himself to be an offensive force in the league. It remains to be seen how Paredes will fare in his new team's lineup, but Cubs fans have reason to be enthusiastic about adding this talented third baseman to their roster.

With this trade, both the Rays and the Cubs hope to find success with their new additions and continue their quests for postseason glory. Only time will tell how this transaction will impact the fortunes of both teams in their respective divisions.
