In a recent report, it has been revealed that the Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott's representatives have been making significant strides in negotiations for a long-term contract for the star quarterback. With only three days remaining before the season opener, Prescott's impending free agency in March raises questions about the timeline for finalizing a deal.
Prescott himself acknowledged the ongoing talks, stating, "I'd say they're working," during a conversation with Schuyler Dixon of the Associated Press. However, the quarterback remained uncertain about the exact timeline, expressing that he trusts the team's Vice President of Football Operations/Football Administration, Todd Williams, and Stephen Jones, to handle the negotiations effectively.
Despite the contract discussions, Prescott emphasized that his main focus is on preparations for the upcoming game against the Browns. He emphasized that what happens on the football field is paramount and has always been his primary motivation for playing the game.
In his own words, Prescott shared, "I've never played the game for [money]. I play the game for the pure love, for the guys in that locker room." He further explained the significance of football in his life, as it brings a sense of peace and camaraderie that few other things can. While acknowledging the financial aspect of the sport, he maintained that it is not the driving force behind his passion.
When questioned about contract talks, Prescott revealed a shift in his mindset compared to last week. He previously stated that he did not care if a deal was reached before the season opener, setting it as a self-imposed deadline. However, he now recognizes that feelings can change rapidly, leaving the situation more open-ended.
Prescott holds a position of leverage due to the inclusion of no-trade and no-tag clauses in his current four-year, $160 million contract signed in 2021. The decision to enter free agency in 2025 ultimately rests with Prescott himself, regardless of any offers made by the Cowboys. It is evident that signing a new deal will require a groundbreaking contract, with a substantial portion guaranteed.
While the negotiations continue, the Cowboys and Prescott strive to find a common ground that will secure the quarterback's long-term future with the franchise. The anticipation builds as fans and the team eagerly await news on the progress of these crucial talks.
