In a once-in-a-lifetime experience, Neil Albstein and Michele Rosenblatt found themselves not only witnessing a total solar eclipse from 30,000 feet in the air, but also getting engaged on a special flight offered by Delta. The couple, originally from New York, took off from Austin, Texas, on Monday as part of Delta's two "path-of-totality flights," a unique opportunity to fly along the path where the moon would completely cover the sun.
On Delta's website, it was revealed that this year's eclipse would travel across the U.S. at an astonishing speed of 1,600 miles per hour, while the aircraft would be moving at approximately 480 miles per hour. The flights' paths and the path of totality would converge about halfway through the planned flight time.
For Albstein, this flight was a momentous occasion that he felt couldn't be topped when it came to proposing to Rosenblatt. Recognizing the significance of the eclipse and wanting to create a once-in-a-lifetime experience, he decided it was the perfect setting to pop the question.
Both Austin and Dallas were within the path of totality, which spanned across 15 states before dipping into Canada. Albstein expressed his feelings to Reuters, saying, "It seemed like I could never come up with anything else so special to propose to her, and I wanted it to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so it just seemed perfect to combine it."
After witnessing the awe-inspiring totality from their unique vantage point, Albstein seized the moment, taking Rosenblatt by surprise with a shiny silver ring that he had kept in a little blue box. The proposal, which had been planned for two months, elicited excited tears from Rosenblatt and cheers from fellow passengers.
Reflecting on the experience, Albstein confessed to Reuters, "Once the eclipse happened - because I knew I wasn't going to propose before the eclipse - once it happened, then my attention shifted and I started getting nervous."
The Detroit Free Press reported that video and photos captured the heartfelt moment mid-air, leaving a lasting memory for the couple and their fellow eclipse viewers. The flight became an unforgettable journey, marking the start of a new chapter in Albstein and Rosenblatt's lives.
Delta's "path-of-totality flights" provided passengers with a unique opportunity to witness a rare celestial event while soaring through the skies. As the couple flew away from the remarkable eclipse, their engagement added an extra layer of joy to an already unforgettable experience.
