The butter's packaging failed to prominently display the presence of milk, a significant allergen for many consumers.
The recall affects both salted and unsalted varieties, with 32,400 pounds of the salted butter and 46,800 pounds of the unsalted butter being recalled. Although the butter's ingredient list did mention cream, it did not explicitly highlight milk as an allergen, which is a crucial requirement for those with dairy sensitivities.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified this recall as a Class II event last week. According to the FDA, a Class II recall refers to "a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote." Milk is among the eight most common allergens and must be clearly labeled on food products, as per FDA guidelines.
The recalled butter products have "best by" dates between February 22, 2025, and March 29, 2025, and were primarily sold at Costco locations in Texas. Consumers who have purchased these products are advised to return them to Costco for a full refund.
The recall announcement has led to surprise and confusion on social media. Many users questioned the necessity of a milk allergy warning on a dairy product like butter. However, some consumers have indicated they would "safely dispose of" the recalled butter, particularly with the holiday baking season fast approaching.
Costco has not issued a comment on the recall, and it remains unclear whether any allergic reactions have been reported due to the labeling omission.
