In a stunning turn of events during Game 6 between the Dallas Stars and the Colorado Avalanche, TNT hockey analyst Paul Bissonnette stirred up controversy by suggesting that the referees may have been betting on the game. Bissonnette's comments came after a crucial goal was waved off in the first overtime, leading to a heated debate about goalie interference.
The disputed play occurred when Mason Marchment appeared to score what could have been the series-winning goal. However, the referees determined that Matt Duchene had interfered with Avalanche goalie Alexandar Georgiev, and the call was upheld even after a review. Replays showed that Colorado defenseman Cale Makar had pushed Duchene into the goalie, prompting Bissonnette to question the legitimacy of the call.
During the intermission between the first and second overtimes, Bissonnette expressed his frustration, stating, "It's clear that the bump from Makar is what throws everything off. So it's basically friendly fire in this case, where I think that for sure should have counted. Obviously, with the ref waiving it off, they're probably going upstairs. They're saying, 'Well, we've got to stick with the original call.' So I don't know if that ref's got the DraftKings sportsbook going right now. But that was kind of a BS call."
Interestingly, former goalie Henrik Lundqvist agreed with the ruling, while former forward Anson Carter disagreed. Bissonnette, also a former forward, served as the tie-breaker in the debate. Ultimately, the Stars went on to win the game in double overtime, with Duchene ironically scoring the game-winning goal.
The controversy surrounding the play continued after the game when Marchment shared the explanation he received for the ruling. "Duchy's ass was over the line," Marchment revealed. "His feet were outside, but his ass was over the line. That was the explanation I got. And then he got pushed in. I think, honestly, they didn't want to make it a deciding goal. I get it, but there's gotta be some sort of standard because you can't push your own guy into your goalie and it be goaltender interference."
Bissonnette's penchant for provocative comments throughout the season has garnered attention, particularly his ongoing trolling of the New York Rangers and their fans. Following the Rangers' loss in Game 5 against the Carolina Hurricanes, Bissonnette suggested in a video posted on X that the Rangers had "given up." However, the Rangers bounced back to win Game 6 and advance to the Eastern Conference Final.
As the Stars await their next opponent in the Western Conference Final, the controversy surrounding the disputed goal and Bissonnette's bold accusations have added yet another layer of intensity to the NHL playoffs. The question remains: will there be further consequences or investigations into the referees' integrity?
