In a surprising Instagram post on Friday, Conor McGregor finally addressed the rumors surrounding his withdrawal from the UFC 303 fight against Michael Chandler. The renowned fighter admitted that he suffered a broken toe during training, sharing pictures of the injury with his followers.
McGregor disclosed that the accident occurred during a training session where he neglected to wear full protective gear. In a revealing statement, he expressed his frustration at the setback, stating, "We had a lapse in concentration and engaged in a training session without wearing the full protective gear, and I hit the toe off the elbow and broke the toe clean."
The former UFC champion reassured his fans that his recovery would only take a few weeks. However, despite his return being imminent, McGregor failed to provide a specific timeline for his comeback. He did, however, express a strong desire to fulfill the final two fights on his UFC contract.
Interestingly, McGregor raised doubts about Chandler being one of his opponents in the future. The revelation has put the former Bellator lightweight champion in an uneasy position, as he has been waiting for a match with McGregor since they filmed Season 31 of "The Ultimate Fighter" in early 2023.
The cancellation of a scheduled press conference in Dublin on June 3 further cast doubt on McGregor's status, leading to numerous reports speculating about a potential injury. McGregor's confirmation has finally put those lingering rumors to rest.
As for McGregor's return, it remains uncertain. The upcoming UFC 304 in Manchester, England, on July 27 and UFC 305 in Perth, Australia, on August 18 already have main events scheduled, leaving UFC 306 on September 14 at the Sphere in Las Vegas as a potential date for McGregor's comeback fight.
McGregor, who will turn 36 next month, hasn't fought since his TKO loss to Dustin Poirier in July 2021, where he suffered a leg injury at the end of the first round.
Fans of McGregor eagerly await his return to the Octagon, hoping to witness the triumphant resurgence of the "Notorious" fighter. Only time will tell when McGregor will step back into the cage and whether Chandler will be one of his future opponents.
