The Columbus Blue Jackets have unveiled their plans to pay tribute to Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, former player Johnny Gaudreau and his late brother, in the upcoming season. The team will update their uniforms to honor the Gaudreau brothers, with the tribute set to begin during the team's first preseason game on September 23.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Blue Jackets announced that players will wear a custom sticker on their helmets to remember the brothers, as well as a patch on their jerseys dedicated to Johnny's memory. The sticker, designed in blue with gray trim, features the surname "GAUDREAU" along with two doves placed between the numbers 13 (which Johnny wore) and 21 (which Matthew wore while at Boston College), both displayed in white.
Once the regular season kicks off, the Blue Jackets players will continue to honor Johnny Gaudreau with a patch featuring his number 13 on their jerseys. This tribute will commence with the team's first regular season game against the Minnesota Wild on October 10 and will be worn by players throughout the entire season.
To commemorate the Gaudreau brothers, the Columbus Blue Jackets will hold a moment of silence during their first preseason home game on September 25, when they face off against the St. Louis Blues. The team will further celebrate the memory of the Gaudreau brothers during their regular season home opener on October 15, which will be against the reigning Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers.
The Columbus Blue Jackets' heartfelt gesture to remember Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau reflects their lasting impact on the organization. This tribute will not only honor their legacy but also serve as a reminder of the profound impact that sports can have on our lives, both on and off the ice.
