In a surprising development, Colorado Buffaloes running back Dylan Edwards has entered the transfer portal, according to reports from 247Sports. Edwards' departure means that the Buffaloes will now be without their top four rushers from the 2023 season.

Edwards, a highly-touted four-star recruit from Derby, Kansas, had initially committed to Kansas State. However, a longstanding relationship with head coach Deion Sanders, who had previously coached Edwards as a youth player in Texas, convinced him to choose Colorado instead.

The running back made an immediate impact for the Buffaloes, scoring four touchdowns in a stunning upset victory over then-No. 17 TCU in the season opener. However, his playing time decreased as the season progressed and Colorado shifted away from their running game. In total, Edwards recorded 321 rushing yards and 299 receiving yards for the team.

This recent development follows the entry of third-string running back Sy'Veon Wilkerson into the transfer portal earlier this week. With Edwards' decision, all four of Colorado's top running backs from the 2023 roster have now entered the transfer portal.

In an effort to shore up their running back depth, the Buffaloes have made moves to bring in Ohio State transfer Dallan Hayden, who accumulated 663 rushing yards and six touchdowns over the past two seasons. Additionally, they are actively pursuing Miami (Ohio) transfer Rashad Amos, who had an impressive campaign last year with 1,075 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. Amos had initially committed to Mississippi State but is expected to visit Boulder in the coming days.

Edwards' entry into the transfer portal marks the 21st player from Colorado to make this decision during the post-spring window. Among those who have entered are prominent starters, including offensive lineman Savion Washington. Overall, there have been over 30 players entering the transfer portal during the 2024 offseason.

Kansas State has emerged as a potential landing spot for Edwards, given his family ties to the program. His father, Leon Edwards, had a successful playing career as a running back for the Wildcats in the early 1990s.

As Colorado deals with the loss of their top rushers, they have also managed to secure four highly-regarded commitments during the post-spring transfer window. These additions will help bolster the team's roster as they tackle the challenges ahead.

The Buffaloes now face the task of adjusting their running back depth chart and finding suitable replacements for the departed players. With the upcoming visits and ongoing recruitment efforts, Colorado remains hopeful for a successful resolution to their rushing concerns.
