Nine collegiate athletes were admitted to the hospital after participating in a workout session supervised by a Tufts University alumnus who had recently completed Navy SEAL training. The incident occurred last week following a 45-minute workout on September 16 with approximately 50 members of the men's lacrosse team at Tufts University. Following the intense exercise, the athletes were diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a rare condition that results from muscle breakdown due to overexertion.
Of the nine students who were hospitalized with rhabdomyolysis, six have been discharged while three individuals remain under medical care as of Monday, according to a statement released by Tufts University. The university has expressed its concern for the well-being of the students and emphasized the importance of their prompt recovery under the supervision of local medical professionals.
Tufts University spokesperson, Patrick Collins, stated, "Our thoughts are with the players and their families, and we are hoping for their quick return to good health under the care of local medical experts." Practice sessions for the men's lacrosse team have been temporarily halted, awaiting clearance from medical staff before resuming any physical activities. Furthermore, an independent investigator is being appointed by the university to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, the university's response, and possible policy adjustments to prevent similar incidents in the future. The university has chosen not to disclose the name of the external investigator until the appointment process is finalized.
