According to reports, Atkinson, who previously served as an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors under Steve Kerr for three years, will replace J.B. Bickerstaff.
Atkinson's coaching experience also includes a stint as an assistant coach under Ty Lue with the Los Angeles Clippers. However, he is perhaps best known for his tenure as the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets from 2016 until the middle of the 2019-20 season. Under his leadership, the Nets made notable improvements, but he was ultimately relieved of his duties before the pandemic brought the sports world to a halt.
During his time with the Nets, Atkinson achieved a record of 118-190 as the team's head coach. Despite facing challenges, he consistently worked towards building a competitive team. Ultimately, his replacement came in the form of Steve Nash, who took over the coaching role.
The Cavaliers, who finished fourth in the conference last season with a record of 48-34, are now set to finalize their contract with Atkinson, as reported by ESPN. The new head coach will be tasked with leading the team to further success, with hopes of reaching the Eastern Conference Finals, a feat that has eluded the Cavaliers in recent years.
In addition to the coaching change, the Cavaliers are facing some crucial offseason decisions regarding their top players. One of the key priorities for the team seems to be securing a contract extension for Donovan Mitchell, who is currently owed $35.4 million this season. However, Mitchell has the option to potentially opt out before the start of the 2025-26 season, adding to the importance of reaching an agreement.
As the Cavaliers prepare for the upcoming season under Atkinson's guidance, there is optimism for a new chapter in the team's history. With a talented roster and an experienced head coach at the helm, Cleveland fans will eagerly await the start of the next NBA season, hoping for success on the court.
