Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb, known for his exceptional talent on the field, will have to wait until at least Week 5 to make his much-anticipated return after a serious knee injury last season. The 28-year-old star player will begin the season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, according to team sources.

Chubb's injury occurred during Week 2 of the 2023 season when he was carted off the field. Subsequent examinations revealed a torn MCL and a damaged ACL in the same knee he had severely injured during his sophomore season at the University of Georgia in 2015. This setback had sidelined him for a significant portion of that year.

Having been drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft, Chubb has proven himself as a formidable force on the field, garnering recognition as a four-time Pro Bowler and a former All-Pro selection. With an impressive career rushing record of 6,511 yards, he currently ranks fourth in franchise history, while his 48 rushing touchdowns place him in third position.

In the 2022 season, Chubb showcased his exceptional skills by amassing a career-high 1,525 rushing yards and scoring 12 touchdowns, appearing in all 17 games. However, with his delayed return this year, the Browns have been forced to contemplate alternatives at the running back position.

While Chubb's absence poses a challenge for the team, the Browns were well aware of this situation and had planned for his return closer to the end of the season, aiming for his peak performance during the changeable weather conditions of AFC North country.

As the Browns kick off the season, their primary concern lies in the health of the rest of their running back roster. Nyheim Hines, who is also in recovery from a torn ACL, did not participate in training camp. Additionally, Pierre Strong Jr. and D'Onta Foreman are currently managing rib injuries of varying severity.

Foreman, despite his own injury, is expected to fill the role of the team's short-yardage back until Chubb's return. Jerome Ford, who made an impact filling in for Chubb in the 2023 season with 813 rushing yards on 204 carries, is projected to take on the starting position. Meanwhile, Strong, an asset in special teams, brings additional versatility to the team.

The Browns have faith in Ford's abilities to contribute across the formation and make plays in the passing game. Although he may not fit the traditional mold of a lead running back, Ford is expected to shoulder a significant workload until Chubb's comeback. However, considering the uncertainty surrounding Hines and Foreman's availability, the team may have to explore external options to ensure a strong running game in early September.

It is evident that the absence of Nick Chubb will be felt by the Cleveland Browns, but the team remains optimistic about his return and look forward to his impact in the latter part of the season. In the meantime, the Browns will rely on their remaining running backs to step up and continue their quest for success on the gridiron.
