Cleveland Browns defensive end Lonnie Phelps has found himself in legal trouble after being charged with drunken driving on Wednesday night. The incident occurred when Phelps crashed his SUV into the Red Shoe Island Bistro located in Key West, Florida. Following the crash, Phelps is also facing a charge for damaging property.

Phelps, 23, was taken into custody by the authorities after reportedly refusing to cooperate with officers at the scene. According to a report from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, obtained by Cleveland.com, Phelps was uncooperative during the arrest.

Photographs circulating from the incident, posted by TMZ Sports, demonstrate the severity of the crash, showcasing the vehicle having become lodged into the side of the restaurant. Initial estimates place the damages at a staggering $300,000.

The Cleveland Browns wasted no time in dealing with the situation, as they waived Phelps from the team on Thursday afternoon. Phelps had joined the Browns as an undrafted free agent in May 2023 and had spent the previous season on their practice squad. In January, the Browns signed him to a reserve/future contract.

Before joining the NFL, Phelps had a successful college football career. He played for Miami (Ohio) from 2019 to 2021 and later for Kansas in 2022. Over the course of 41 games, Phelps recorded an impressive 23 sacks and 29.5 tackles for loss.

The legal repercussions that Phelps now faces could have a significant impact on his future in football. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the legal proceedings will pan out and whether Phelps will be able to bounce back from this incident.
