**USC Gamecocks' Defense Shines Under Clayton White’s Leadership**

While the South Carolina Gamecocks have experienced some offensive challenges during Shane Beamer's tenure, the defense has been a consistent source of strength. Thus far in 2024, the Gamecocks' defensive unit is on the cusp of breaking into the top 25, allowing just 19 points per game. This impressive performance is a credit to defensive coordinator Clayton White, a former NC State linebacker with a brief NFL career who later transitioned into coaching.

White’s approach to defense reflects his background as a hard-hitting linebacker. The Gamecocks' defense is aggressive, with a secondary that isn't afraid to challenge receivers in man coverage. White frequently deploys all-out blitzes on third downs, aiming to rattle opposing quarterbacks and disrupt their offensive rhythm. The defense’s versatility is evident in their shifting between 3-man and 4-man fronts, though they primarily use a 2-4-5 scheme, reminiscent of Pete Golding's Alabama defenses. This strategy emphasizes the prowess of edge rushers while ensuring the secondary employs man quarters coverage to prevent deep plays.

A standout on this defense is senior linebacker Debo Williams, now in his third year as a starter. Williams, an All-SEC performer last season, is a key figure in the middle, known for his powerful tackling and run-stuffing abilities. His presence allows the defensive front to aggressively chase quarterbacks, with the confidence that Williams will handle any residual threats. Senior Kyle Kennard, another significant contributor, leads the team with 8.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. This performance continues his strong showing from last year after transferring from Georgia Tech. On the opposite edge, true freshman Dylan Stewart is making waves. At 6'6" and with notable quickness, Stewart shows promise for a future professional career, already tallying 5.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks.

The interior defensive line features fifth-year players Alex Huntley and Tonka Hemmingway. While not headline-makers, these players excel at occupying blockers and hustling to follow through on plays. The secondary, however, is where the defense truly becomes intriguing. Safety Nick Emmanwori, an All-SEC player, leads the team with 29 tackles and two interceptions this season. Jalon Kilgore, returning as a nickel corner, was among the top tacklers last season. This group excels in open-field tackling and man coverage but has shown vulnerability in zone coverage, occasionally leading to pass interference penalties due to their aggressive playstyle.

Third down is a particularly critical moment for the Gamecocks' defense, often featuring an all-out blitz. This high-risk, high-reward approach can lead to pivotal defensive stops or significant gains for the opposing offense.

Alabama's offense faces a tough test against this blitz-heavy defense. Quarterback Jalen Milroe has struggled against similar defensive schemes, suggesting a strategic focus on exploiting intermediate passing lanes and running plays that counter the aggressive blitzes. This matchup might resemble Alabama's game against USF, potentially resulting in an offensive performance in the 32-35 point range — solid, yet a notch below their season average.
