In a thrilling display of strength and determination, Liu Huanhua has secured China's fourth weightlifting gold medal at the Paris Olympics. Liu emerged as the victor in the fiercely contested men's 102 kilograms category on Saturday, adding to China's impressive tally in the weightlifting events.
The competition saw Liu pitted against reigning Tokyo champion Akbar Djuraev from Uzbekistan in a reclassified division, as the weightlifting events were downsized from 14 to 10. Djuraev, who had previously won gold at 109 kilograms, had to undergo a drastic weight cut from 240 to 224 pounds.
"It was a little difficult to lose the weight," admitted Djuraev. "That's why I could only manage to secure the silver medal. Perhaps for the next Olympics, there will be further changes to the weight categories, giving me a better chance at achieving a more favorable result."
China had already dominated the weightlifting arena, clinching a remarkable total of seven gold medals at the previous Games. However, Liu's victory in the men's 102kg category marked a significant milestone for Chinese weightlifting, as the country had never secured a gold medal at a level above 100 kilograms.
"I believe this gold medal is not only a testament to our team's prowess but also a breakthrough moment for Chinese weightlifting," expressed Liu, who made his Olympic debut at the age of 22. "It will instill greater confidence in our heavyweight weightlifters, showing that we can emerge victorious and achieve remarkable results on the world stage."
Liu claimed the top spot with an impressive score of 406. Djuraev, despite his weight cut challenges, managed to secure the silver medal with a score of 404. Yauheni Tsikhantsou, competing as a neutral athlete from Belarus, clinched the bronze with a score of 402. Notably, Ramiro Mora, representing the Refugee Team and originally from Cuba but now residing in Britain, finished in seventh place.
The weightlifting excitement is set to continue on Sunday, with Li Wenwen from China vying for another potential gold in the women's 81-plus kilograms weight class. Meanwhile, the United States celebrated their first gold medal in weightlifting since 2000, thanks to Olivia Reeves' triumph in the women's 71 kilograms category. Additionally, Hampton Morris brought home a bronze medal in the men's 61 kilograms category, earning the U.S. two medals in total.
As the Paris Olympics unfolds, the world bears witness to the incredible feats of strength, determination, and triumph displayed by these exceptional athletes.
