In a heartwarming gesture, the Chicago Bears have given safety Jonathan Owens time off from July 29 to Aug. 3 so that he can be in Paris to support his wife, the legendary gymnast Simone Biles, as she competes in the Paris Olympics. This means Owens will miss the Hall of Fame game on Aug. 1 against the Houston Texans, the team he previously played for.
Bears coach Matt Eberflus expressed his support for Owens, stating, "We respect the Olympics. That's a big deal. He's supporting the one he loves the most. I think that's so cool that he gets to do that, we welcome that and it's going to be awesome." Eberflus' sentiment was met with laughter from those present.
Owens, who is entering his seventh season in the NFL, will also miss four training camp practices due to his absence. However, Eberflus highlighted that Owens has a valid reason to be away from the team as he cheers on his wife during this monumental event.
During his time in Paris, Owens will have the opportunity to witness Biles' exceptional performances. He will be able to see her compete in the team final on July 30, where the U.S. women's gymnastics team is heavily favored to win gold. In addition, Owens will witness Biles in the all-around final on Aug. 1, where she has a strong chance of becoming just the third woman in history, and the first since Vĕra Čáslavská in 1968, to win two Olympic titles.
Biles herself is an extraordinary athlete, holding the distinction of being the most decorated gymnast in history, with a staggering 37 combined medals from world championships and Olympic competitions. She has already secured four Olympic gold medals, along with a silver and two bronzes, tying Shannon Miller for the most medals won by a U.S. gymnast.
Expressing his excitement about supporting his wife, Owens previously stated, "It's just fun for me to be able to witness (her) greatness. I just love getting to watch her in her environment. Seeing her locked in, it's just amazing to see. She goes up there and does it, every freaking time. Surpasses what she's supposed to do. I love that."
Biles had previously disclosed Owens' opportunity to join her in Paris, sharing that the Bears would be granting him time off to support her. The couple, who met in March 2020, have been unable to attend each other's events due to various scheduling conflicts and the strict COVID protocols set by the Olympic Games.
While Owens has been present at Biles' meets throughout the summer, this will be the first time he gets to watch her compete on an international stage. Biles has also been a supportive spectator at Owens' football games, both during his time with the Texans and last season with the Green Bay Packers.
The Bears' decision to allow Owens time off to be with his wife showcases the importance of supporting loved ones and highlights the significance of the Olympic Games. As Biles and countless other athletes strive for excellence on the world stage, the power of unwavering support and love continues to shine through.
