In a deeply heartfelt and poignant moment, the former Chicago Bears star, Steve McMichael, was officially inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday. The emotional ceremony took place at McMichael's home in Chicago, as he continues his brave fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as "Lou Gehrig's disease." Despite his physical limitations, the 66-year-old McMichael, wearing his prestigious gold Hall of Fame jacket, was surrounded by loved ones, including his wife Misty, teammates from the legendary '85 Bears, and fellow Hall of Famers.
Steve McMichael was an iconic figure for the '85 Bears, a team known for its exceptional talent and larger-than-life personalities. After a successful football career, McMichael later ventured into the world of professional wrestling in WCW. He even made a bid for mayor of Romeoville, Illinois, in 2012. However, it was his contributions on the football field that solidified his place as a standout player in NFL history.
Selected as a third-round pick by the New England Patriots in 1980, McMichael would spend the majority of his career in Chicago, becoming an integral part of the formidable "46 defense" under coordinator Buddy Ryan. Known for his relentless style of play, McMichael managed an impressive 95 sacks and 847 tackles during his career, solidifying himself as one of the most accomplished interior linemen in NFL history.
During the induction ceremony, McMichael's introduction was done by Jarrett Payton, the son of Bears Hall of Famer Walter Payton. McMichael referred to Payton as his "pseudo son" in a touching acceptance speech, which was read by his sister Kathy due to the difficulty in his ability to communicate. Despite his battle with ALS, McMichael made it clear that he did not want the disease to define his legacy.
The Hall of Fame induction ceremony served as a testament to McMichael's toughness, resilience, and enduring spirit. It highlighted his outstanding achievements on the football field, his vibrant personality, and his unwavering determination to make a lasting impact beyond the confines of the game. As the football world celebrates Steve McMichael's induction into the Hall of Fame, his inspiring journey serves as a reminder of the human spirit's ability to transcend adversity and leave a lasting legacy.
