### Bears Coach Matt Eberflus Contests Missed Penalty on Game-Ending Block
In a season marred by numerous close losses, the Chicago Bears faced yet another heartbreaker on Sunday when the Green Bay Packers managed to block Cairo Santos' potentially game-winning field goal attempt. The 46-yard kick could have turned the tide for the Bears, but the Packers' special teams had other plans.
Bears coach Matt Eberflus initially stood by his strategic decision to attempt the field goal rather than running another play. However, come Monday, Eberflus's focus shifted to what he believes was a critical officiating error. According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, Eberflus plans to submit video evidence to the NFL, arguing that the officials missed a penalty for illegal contact with the long snapper during the blocked kick attempt.
Eberflus's complaint centers around a specific NFL rule that prohibits defenders from making contact with the long snapper, especially when the snapper’s head is down and within one second of the snap. Eberflus claims that long snapper Scott Daly was hit while he was in a vulnerable position, a violation that went unnoticed by the game officials and thus, no flag was thrown.
"This was a critical missed call. The Packers were on our long snapper, and a penalty should have been called," Eberflus stated.
Despite potentially valid grounds for his grievance, questions remain about what Eberflus aims to achieve through this protest. The outcome of the game cannot be altered retrospectively. Critics argue that his actions might only serve to bring more scrutiny to his decision to kick the field goal rather than extending the play.
As the NFL reviews the submitted video, the debate over the decision and the missed call continues to fuel discussions among Bears fans and analysts alike.
