**Cher Opens Up About Troubled Marriage and Dark Moments in New Memoir**

In her recently released memoir, Cher reveals a particularly harrowing event that took place during what she describes as a "loveless marriage" to Sonny Bono. Reflecting on the turmoil she endured, Cher recounts a night in 1972 when she stood on the balcony of her Las Vegas hotel room, deeply contemplating ending her life. This occurred three years after she and Bono had officially gotten married. Cher, who was 16 when she first met Bono in 1962, felt increasingly isolated and trapped, despite their widespread fame from hit songs and their popular TV show, "The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour."

Cher explains in the memoir that Bono was extremely controlling, which heightened her sense of entrapment. Standing on that balcony at just 26-years-old, she was overwhelmed by loneliness and momentarily considered jumping off to escape her situation. "I was dizzy with loneliness," she wrote, noting that for a few frantic moments, it seemed like the only escape. She confessed to stepping onto that balcony five or six times, only pulling back each time because she realized the potential impact her actions could have on her admirers and her family.

Instead of going through with the drastic measure, Cher came to an important realization on that fateful night: "I don't have to jump off. I can just leave him." Her marriage to Bono soon fell apart; they separated shortly after the incident and filed for divorce in 1974, finalizing it the following year.

Cher's new book, "Cher, The Memoir: Part One," was published today. It delves into her early life as Cherilyn Sarkisian and explores her rise to stardom as well as her tumultuous relationship with Bono. Fans won’t have to wait too long for more, as a second part of the memoir is slated for release next year.

Last night, Cher made an appearance on "The Tonight Show" where she talked about the challenging process of writing her memoir. She remarked, "It was a bitch. It's not going through your life that's hard so much. But I did it a couple of times because the first time it didn't work out. The second time I just didn't want to tell anything." During her candid interview with Jimmy Fallon, she revealed that some parts of her life were difficult to share, admitting, "It's hard because when you're telling your life there's parts you'd like to guard."

In addition to her literary endeavors, the newly inducted Rock & Roll Hall of Fame artist hinted at exciting developments in her musical career. Jimmy Fallon inquired about the possibility of new music, to which Cher enthusiastically confirmed, "I'm about to."
