In a heartfelt interview with PEOPLE, Céline Dion, the renowned music superstar, shares her journey of strength and resilience in the face of daunting health challenges. Dion, who was diagnosed with the rare autoimmune and neurological disorder stiff-person syndrome (SPS) in August 2022, opens up about how she finds the courage to push forward for the sake of her three sons.
For years, Dion has battled mysterious health struggles, experiencing excruciating muscle spasms, difficulty walking, and breathing. However, her symptoms took a turn for the worse prior to her SPS diagnosis. Despite the overwhelming obstacles, Dion's primary concern remained her children, as she did not want them to live in fear after losing their father, René Angélil, to throat cancer six years before her own diagnosis.
In an effort to reassure her sons, René-Charles (23) and twins Nelson and Eddy (13), Dion explained to them that her condition was different and not life-threatening. Although she faced moments of despair, where walking was challenging and daily life seemed limited, Dion remained determined to show her children that she could learn to live with her condition.
Dion's journey is explored in a Prime Video documentary titled "I Am: Celine Dion." Directed by Academy Award-nominated director Irene Taylor, the documentary is set to premiere globally on June 25, shedding light on the superstar's battle back to the stage and her life with her three sons.
The music icon, who cancelled a planned Las Vegas residency and tour dates in 2021 and 2022, first shared her diagnosis with fans in a tearful video on Instagram in December 2022. Dion acknowledged the difficulty of discussing her health challenges but expressed her determination to overcome them.
A trailer for the upcoming film showcases Dion's unwavering dedication to returning to the stage she loves. "I miss it so much. The people, I miss them," she says. Dion's appearance at the Grammys in February, where she presented Taylor Swift with the Album of the Year award, received a standing ovation, symbolizing her determination to continue her musical journey despite her health struggles.
In addition to the documentary, Dion will discuss her health battle in a sit-down interview with Hoda Kotb for an NBC News primetime special airing on June 11 at 10 p.m. EST. During the preview aired on Today, Dion shared her regrets about not taking the time to address her health issues earlier, as she was focused on caring for her late husband and raising her children.
As Céline Dion continues to inspire millions with her indomitable spirit, her latest interviews and upcoming documentary shine a light on her exceptional journey of resilience, reminding the world that even in the face of adversity, her love and devotion to her children give her the strength to keep moving forward.
