Tulsky had been serving as the interim GM following the resignation of his predecessor, Don Waddell, in May.
Tulsky, who is widely recognized as a leading authority on hockey analytics, was the clear frontrunner for the position as Carolina owner Tom Dundon began his search for Waddell's successor. Notably, Tulsky had also interviewed for general manager openings in Chicago and Pittsburgh.
"Eric is ready for this opportunity," stated Dundon. "He has a proven history of managing people and overseeing operations, both within and outside of hockey, over the last decade with the Hurricanes."
Tulsky's journey with the Hurricanes began in 2014 when he joined the organization as a consultant. He quickly made his mark and became a hockey analyst in 2015. In 2017, Tulsky assumed the role of manager of hockey analytics and then progressed to vice president of hockey management and strategy in 2018. In January 2021, he was promoted to Hurricanes assistant GM.
During Tulsky's tenure as assistant GM, the Hurricanes consistently made it to the playoffs, becoming a perennial playoff team. Their most notable achievement came in the 2022-23 season when they reached the Eastern Conference final, only to be swept by the Florida Panthers. The team's Stanley Cup dreams were dashed this season when they were defeated by the New York Rangers in the second round.
As the newly appointed general manager, Tulsky will aim to build upon the successful legacy left by his predecessor, Don Waddell. Under Waddell's leadership from 2018 to 2024, the Hurricanes made six playoff appearances and clinched three division titles.
Tulsky's ascent in the realm of hockey analytics is remarkable. His research and contributions to the field have been widely recognized and respected, even before his time with the Hurricanes. From his zone entry project to his work on NHL player aging, Tulsky has played a pivotal role in advancing data-based concepts in hockey analysis.
Furthermore, Tulsky's background is unique among front office executives, with his data-driven approach and a Ph.D. in chemistry. Over the past decade, he has demonstrated his leadership abilities by overseeing the Hurricanes' analytics department and pro-scouting, balancing both analytical insights and traditional hockey perspectives.
This promotion represents an innovative move in NHL circles, spotlighting the importance of analytics and Tulsky's remarkable journey within the Hurricanes' organization. Fans and analysts will be keeping a close eye on his future decisions as he leads the team into uncharted territory, aiming for continued success in a data-driven era of hockey management.
