One of the Caribbean prison escapees allegedly involved in the kidnapping and presumed murders of an American couple during a violent yacht hijacking has been captured. The suspect, along with two accomplices, is accused of forcibly taking Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel's catamaran after escaping from Grenada's Grand Anse Beach. The Virginia couple's abandoned vessel, named "Simplicity," was found about 70 miles off of St. Vincent where the suspects were arrested.
The Royal Grenada Police Force confirmed the suspect's connection to the hijacked yacht and shared a video of him being taken into custody. The trio is currently detained on immigration-related charges in St. Vincent as authorities work through jurisdictional issues before pressing charges for the prison escape, yacht hijacking, and the presumed deaths of Hendry and Brandel.
Mike Hutchinson, a veteran journalist in Grenada, expressed relief at the trio's capture, stating that the region is safer now that they are in custody. He emphasized that such crime sprees are uncommon in Grenada and that the community was shaken by the events surrounding the American couple.
Brandel and Hendry lived a unique and adventurous life, having sold their possessions to retire on their boat. Their sons, Nick Buro and Bryan Hendry, held out hope for their parents' safe return, but local authorities have declared them "presumed dead." The couple was reportedly thrown overboard during the escape between Grenada and St. Vincent.
Search operations for the bodies are ongoing, involving local law enforcement agencies and the coast guard. Buro and Bryan Hendry, along with other family members and friends, paid tribute to their parents' spirit of adventure and values, highlighting the love and compassion they embodied.
The incident has cast a shadow over the vibrant tourist destinations of the Caribbean islands, popular among boaters and vacationers. With the suspects detained and investigations underway, the community continues to mourn the loss of the beloved American couple.
