### Lorde Opens Up About Gender Identity in Rolling Stone Interview
Lorde is shedding light on her experience with gender identity in anticipation of her upcoming album, *Virgin*. In a candid interview with Rolling Stone, the multifaceted artist discussed her ongoing journey of self-discovery and gender fluidity.
During the interview, Lorde described a conversation she had with close friend and fellow artist Chappell Roan. When Roan asked about her gender identity, Lorde responded with, "I'm a woman except for the days when I'm a man." She elaborated that while she predominantly identifies as a cisgender woman who uses "she/her" pronouns, exploring her gender isn't something she wishes to confine to labels.
Lorde emphasized her respect for the complexities surrounding gender identity, particularly for those who face more significant societal challenges. She stated, "Making the expression privately is one thing, but I want to make very clear that I'm not trying to take any space from anyone who has more on the line than me." Lorde acknowledged her privileged position and noted her intention to not overshadow the voices of more marginalized individuals.
The themes of gender fluidity will be further explored in *Virgin*, set to release on June 27. The opening track of the album features the lyric, "Some days I'm a woman / Some days I'm a man," providing a glimpse into the thematic direction of the new record. The album artwork also hints at deeper explorations of identity, featuring a blue x-ray image with a zipper going down a pelvis, a belt buckle, and an IUD.
As part of her journey, Lorde shared a personal moment of realization when she tried on men's jeans and sent a photo to her collaborator, Jim-E Stack. His encouraging response served as a catalyst for her to embrace the broader spectrum of her gender identity.
Lorde also reflected on her decision to stop using birth control in late 2023, which she said had a significant impact on her sense of femininity. Describing the experience of ovulating for the first time in ten years, she noted, "It felt like I had cut some sort of cord between myself and this regulated femininity."
Fans can expect *Virgin* to delve into these personal revelations and more, as Lorde continues to navigate and express her evolving identity.
