### Controversy at Camerimage 2023: Director's Remarks Ignite Debate as Festival Opens

The 32nd edition of the EnergaCamerimage festival commenced in Torun, Poland amid controversy sparked by recent comments from director Marek Żydowicz. Without mentioning the uproar directly, Żydowicz emphasized that the festival aims to honor individuals "who are overlooked" by other awards. Addressing a filled auditorium, he underscored the importance of cinematographers in combatting misinformation and creating truthful visuals, all through an interpreter.

The controversy began with an article Żydowicz penned for Cinematography World magazine, suggesting that increasing the representation of female directors of photography (DPs) and filmmakers might lead to the selection of "mediocre film productions." This statement drew severe backlash from organizations such as Women in Cinematography, the British Society of Cinematographers (BSC), the American Society of Cinematographers, and leaders of the International Cinematographers Guild (IATSE Local 600). The BSC's response expressed strong disappointment, labeling Żydowicz’s remarks as "profoundly misogynistic" and indicative of inherent prejudice.

In his defense, Żydowicz claimed his comments had been misunderstood and reaffirmed his respect for everyone involved in cinema. He insisted that the festival's mission to showcase high-quality contemporary films remains unchanged and untainted by disregard for women in the industry.

Meanwhile, the festival welcomed juries, nominees, and key speakers. Cate Blanchett heads Camerimage's main competition jury and committed to engaging in "meaningful discussions" sparked by the recent controversy. Moreover, the opening ceremony featured a recorded address from conceptual and performance artist Marina Abramović, who highlighted the contributions of women in the arts while accepting her Camerimage award for artistic achievement.

Adding to the tensions, filmmaker Coralie Fargeat withdrew her film "The Substance" from the festival in direct response to Żydowicz’s comments.

As has been tradition, the festival outlined its schedule, emphasizing that in three of the last four years, the film winning the festival's Golden Frog award has subsequently received an Academy Award nomination for cinematography. Camerimage will run through November 23, despite the cloud of controversy hanging over its opening.
