California residents will soon have the opportunity to add their driver's licenses and state IDs to Apple Wallet, offering a simple and secure way to present their identification using an iPhone or Apple Watch. Apple announced its collaboration with the state of California to bring this innovative feature to its home state, providing residents with an easy, secure, and private way to present their California driver's licenses and state IDs both in person and within select apps.
Jennifer Bailey, Apple's vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, expressed excitement about the partnership, stating, "We're thrilled to work with the state of California in bringing IDs to Apple Wallet, providing a seamless way for residents to present their driver's licenses and state IDs with the security features built into iPhone and Apple Watch." This new functionality will empower Californians to breeze through travel and conveniently verify their age or identity at businesses, all while prioritizing user privacy and protection.
Apple Wallet users will be able to showcase their driver's licenses and state IDs in person at select TSA security checkpoints and businesses, as well as within certain apps to verify their age or identity. Apple Wallet leverages the advanced privacy and security features of iPhone and Apple Watch to safeguard users' personal information and identity. When adding an ID to Apple Wallet, only the necessary information is shared with the state-issuing authority for approval, ensuring minimal data exposure.
Presenting a driver's license or state ID via Apple Wallet requires users to authorize sharing specific transaction-related information using Face ID or Touch ID. Importantly, users are not required to unlock, physically show, or hand over their device when presenting their ID, making the process seamless and secure. All ID information is encrypted and stored solely on the user's device, granting access only if the user chooses to present it.
Both Apple and the state-issuing authority will remain unaware of when, where, and with whom a user chooses to present their driver's license or state ID, establishing an added layer of anonymity. Apple does not retain or have access to any presentment information tied to a user, further ensuring the privacy of Californians utilizing Apple Wallet for their identification needs. In the event of a lost iPhone or Apple Watch, users have the option to use Apple's Find My app to lock or erase the device remotely, enhancing security measures.
While currently available in Arizona, Maryland, Colorado, Georgia, and Ohio, Apple Wallet's ID feature is set to expand its reach to California. The launch will be part of the California Department of Motor Vehicles' (DMV) mDL pilot program, contributing to a more digitized and convenient identification experience for Californians. Additional details about the mDL pilot program can be found on the DMV's official website.
With Apple Wallet's integration of driver's licenses and state IDs, California residents can look forward to a technologically-driven approach to identification, offering both convenience and security in their everyday lives.
