In a significant development, a California state judge has recommended the disbarment of right-wing attorney John Eastman for his involvement in former President Donald Trump's efforts to block the certification of the 2020 election results. The recommendation comes as part of a series of repercussions faced by lawyers associated with Trump's post-election legal battles.

Eastman has expressed his intention to appeal the ruling, with the dispute set to be taken to the California Supreme Court. However, Eastman will not be able to practice law during this period. The outcome of ongoing investigations into other attorneys, such as Sidney Powell and L. Lin Wood, remains uncertain, and the disbarment hearings for attorney Jeffrey Clark are still ongoing.

Several lawyers who supported Trump's attempts to overturn the election, albeit without directly representing him in court, have also faced consequences. In a Michigan case where Trump was not a plaintiff, Powell's co-counsel received sanctions, jointly owing over $175,000 in attorneys' fees. They have also been ordered to undergo legal education and face potential discipline from their respective state bars.

Wood, who was involved in post-election lawsuits including the Michigan litigation, has been under investigation by the State Bar of Georgia. However, he retired before any formal disciplinary action could be taken.

While Trump's attorneys have generally denied any wrongdoing and opposed punitive actions, Michael Cohen, a former lawyer for Trump, has pleaded guilty to his crimes, and other attorneys have accepted plea deals. Powell, for her part, continues to deny defamation allegations against her, cautioning that the sanctions set a "dangerous precedent" for lawyers representing unpopular causes or clients.

Although Ellis admitted in court to making "misrepresentations" about the election, she later retweeted a statement denying that she had ever admitted to lying. Eastman's lawyer reaffirmed that his client's handling of the legal issues surrounding the election was grounded in reasonable legal precedent and accused the courts of denying him the ability to practice law to pay his legal fees. The lawyer argued that this restriction served no purpose in protecting the public.

It is worth noting that Trump and his allies lodged approximately 60 court cases in an attempt to alter the outcome of the 2020 election. However, they were unsuccessful in all but one case, which had minimal impact on the overall results and took place in Pennsylvania.

Since leaving office, Trump has been mired in numerous legal issues. He faces various lawsuits relating to his alleged involvement in the January 6 Capitol riot, four criminal cases, civil fraud litigation by New York Attorney General Letitia James against him and his company, and two defamation lawsuits filed by writer E. Jean Carroll. Trump has consistently maintained his innocence, describing the cases as "witch hunts" orchestrated to damage his presidential campaign.

As the legal battles continue, Trump has been ordered to pay a combined total of $540 million in the fraud and defamation cases. However, he has pleaded not guilty to the criminal charges against him, standing firm in his assertions of innocence.
