BYD continues to soar in the new energy vehicle (NEV) market, achieving its sixth consecutive month of record-breaking sales overseas in May 2023. The company sold an impressive 89,047 NEVs internationally, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 137.46% and a month-on-month rise of 12.60%.

In total, BYD reported sales of 382,476 vehicles in May, showing a year-on-year increase of 15.27% and a slight month-on-month increase of 0.63%. The company's NEV sales were a key driver, with 376,930 passenger NEVs sold, marking a year-on-year increase of 14.05% and a month-on-month rise of 1.16%.

Battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales stood out with a significant increase. Passenger BEVs saw sales of 204,369 units in May, up 39.60% year-on-year and 4.41% month-on-month. Conversely, sales of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) fell by 6.26% year-on-year to 172,561 units, and by 2.44% month-on-month, continuing a trend of decline for the second consecutive month.

Commercial NEVs showed impressive growth with 5,546 units sold in May, a year-on-year increase of 317.31%, though this represented a decrease of 25.80% on the month. As China's largest NEV manufacturer and second-largest power battery producer, BYD installed about 28.476 GWh in power batteries and energy storage batteries in May, up 101.12% from the previous year and 7.55% from April.

From January to May, BYD's total NEV sales reached 1,763,369 units, reflecting a robust year-on-year growth of 38.70%. Passenger NEVs accounted for 1,735,643 units of these sales, up 37.00% year-on-year, while commercial NEVs totaled 27,726 units, up an impressive 531.43%. Notably, passenger BEV sales for the first five months of the year totaled 816,497 units, a 40.54% increase year-on-year, and passenger PHEV sales reached 919,146 units, up 33.99%.

Overseas NEV sales from January to May amounted to 374,217 units, a year-on-year increase of 112.13%, further emphasizing BYD's expanding international footprint. Additionally, the company's power battery and energy storage battery installation capacity for the same period was about 107.507 GWh, up 90.43% year-on-year, indicating significant growth in its energy solutions sector.

BYD's strategic shift away from internal combustion engines to focus on NEVs, both for passenger and commercial vehicles, continues to yield positive results. The company's robust sales performance and global expansion underscore its leading position in the new energy market.
