In a shocking turn of events, Bulgarian-Nigerian women's boxer, Joana Nwamerue, has accused Algerian gold medalist, Imane Khelif, of being a man. This accusation comes after Khelif was embroiled in a gender controversy during the Olympics.
Nwamerue, who had the opportunity to spar with Khelif on several occasions, expressed her doubts about the Algerian boxer's gender identity. She claimed that Khelif, who won the gold medal in the Paris Olympics, has "internal issues" and that she believes Khelif to be a man.
Nwamerue further alleged that she was approached by some of Khelif's teammates, who claimed that the gold medalist had undergone biological alterations due to her high-altitude lifestyle in the mountains with her family.
"I think we played three-to-four sparring sessions," Nwamerue stated, according to Reduxx. "I have a record of everything. I can confirm that this is a man to me. Male power. Men's techniques, everything."
However, it is important to note that Khelif is not transgender and was born a woman. The International Boxing Association (IBA) had previously banned Khelif due to a failed test, which IBA president Umar Kremlev claimed revealed that she had XY chromosomes.
Despite the controversy, Khelif emerged victorious in the Paris Olympics, securing the gold medal in the welterweight tournament. Her dominance throughout the competition was evident as she won all five of her matches.
Following her triumph, Khelif addressed the harassment she faced, stating that it "harms human dignity." She urged people to uphold the Olympic principles and refrain from bullying athletes, as it can have detrimental effects on their mental well-being.
"It can destroy people, it can kill people's thoughts, spirit, and mind," Khelif expressed, according to NBC New York. "It can divide people."
In addition to speaking out against the harassment, Khelif also took legal action against the online abuse she encountered due to the gender controversy.
The accusations made by Nwamerue have sparked a heated debate within the boxing community, with many questioning the validity of her claims. Despite the controversy, Khelif's gold medal victory remains a significant achievement in her career, showcasing her skill and determination in the ring.
