In a shocking but not entirely unexpected announcement, the Brooklyn Nets confirmed on Thursday morning that their star player, Ben Simmons, will not be returning to the court for the remainder of the season. This disappointing news came as Simmons continues to battle ongoing leg pain caused by a nerve impingement in his lower back.

The official Twitter account of the Brooklyn Nets relayed the medical update, stating that Simmons will be consulting with specialists and exploring treatment options for his persistent condition. Having played just 15 games this season and 42 games in the previous season, it is evident that this is a continuation of the back issues that have plagued him for the past three years.

Speaking to SNY, Bernie Lee, Simmons' agent, revealed that they are seeking clearer answers on how to break the cycle of reactive pain he is experiencing. This is a significant shift from Lee's previous statements, where he suggested that Simmons' recent setbacks were isolated incidents rather than part of a recurring pattern. Orthopedists consulted by Nets beat reporters also warned that the nerve impingement could resurface without warning.

Lee hinted that a second back surgery is now being considered as a possible option for Simmons. Expressing his determination to find a non-surgical solution, Lee took responsibility for the failed attempts to help Simmons recover fully. Despite his optimism and efforts to find the best specialists, it is clear that the current approach has not yielded the desired results.

The disappointment extends to the Nets fan base, as they have been repeatedly given hopeful scenarios for Simmons' return to health, only to see them fall short each time. Simmons, who is currently the team's highest-paid player with a salary of $39.7 million this season and $40.3 million next season, has not been able to contribute as expected since joining the team in the trade involving James Harden, Seth Curry, Andre Drummond, and draft picks.

Unfortunately for the Nets, they are unable to seek a disabled player exception for Simmons, as the deadline for applying to the league for such an exception was before January 15. This further complicates the team's roster and strategy moving forward.

As Ben Simmons' season-ending injury continues to create uncertainty for the Brooklyn Nets, the organization and fans can only hope for a successful resolution to his ongoing back problems. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
