In a year filled with travel reprieves, Brazil has announced a postponement to the start of its new visa system for travelers from the United States, Canada, and Australia. Originally set to be introduced in 2024, the new visa requirements will now take effect from April 10, 2025.

Under the new regulations, citizens from the US, Canada, and Australia will need to obtain a visa to enter Brazil. However, the process has been made more convenient for tourists and cruise travelers, as they can apply for an evisa online instead of visiting a consulate. The cost of the visa will be $80.90, and it will be valid for a period of 10 years, allowing multiple entries with a maximum stay of 90 days per year.

Those applying for the visa will be required to provide additional information, as outlined by the Brazilian government's website. A letter of intent specifying the dates and purpose of the trip, along with confirmed accommodation details, must be submitted. Additionally, applicants will need to show proof of residence in the US, return tickets to Brazil, and proof of income.

Proof of income can be established through the submission of the last three checking or savings account statements or the last six payslips. Travelers are required to demonstrate an average balance of at least $2,000 in their account. Those who do not meet the financial requirements may seek a sponsor who can vouch for their finances.

While the visa process may appear complex, it follows the principle of reciprocity. Brazilian citizens traveling to the US face similar or even stricter requirements, including scheduling a visa appointment at the nearest embassy and demonstrating the means to finance their entire trip. Currently, a visa to the US, even for transit purposes, costs $185.

The processing time for the Brazilian visa system is expected to be an average of five working days. However, VFS, the company responsible for handling applications, recommends applying at least two months prior to travel.

According to travel trade publication TravelPulse, Brazil witnessed nearly six million arrivals in 2023, with 483,000 US citizens visiting in the first nine months of that year alone. This makes US visitors the second largest group after Argentinians.

With the new visa system set to take effect in 2025, travelers from the US, Canada, and Australia planning trips to Brazil will need to factor in the additional requirements and costs associated with obtaining the necessary visa.
