**Veteran Guard Lonnie Walker IV Waived by Celtics; Likely to Join G League's Maine Celtics**
In the run-up to the new NBA season, teams have been actively finalizing their rosters, and the Boston Celtics made significant moves on Saturday. The Celtics decided to waive veteran guard Lonnie Walker IV, a decision reported by ESPN's Bobby Marks. Walker, who is 25 years old, had inked an Exhibit 10 deal with Boston back in August and showcased his skills during the preseason, averaging 7.3 points in 16.4 minutes per game.
One major factor influencing the Celtics' decision was the financial implication. According to Keith Smith of Spotrac, keeping Walker on the roster would have cost the team $11 million in salary and associated tax penalties. This financial burden likely played a crucial role in Boston’s choice to part ways with the guard.
With Walker now a free agent, he has the option to join the Celtics' G League affiliate, the Maine Celtics, if he isn’t picked up by another NBA team.
In a related move, Boston also signed wing player Jordan Schakel to an Exhibit 10 contract on Saturday, as per Smith's reports. Like Walker, Schakel is set to be waived and will also join the Maine Celtics. Consequently, the Boston Celtics will begin their season with 14 players on their roster unless they decide to bring in another addition.
