In an interview with MLB Network Radio, Toronto Blue Jays General Manager Ross Atkins revealed that he has received inquiries from other teams regarding potential trades involving first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. or shortstop Bo Bichette. However, Atkins made it clear that he has no intention of parting ways with these young stars.
Atkins stated, "It just doesn't make any sense for us to make those trades. Because they are so talented and such great teammates, they are attractive to other teams, so they will call." Guerrero Jr. and Bichette have been key contributors to the team's success and the Blue Jays value their long-term potential.
Both players are currently under contract with the Blue Jays through the 2025 season, and Atkins revealed that discussions have already taken place about a possible contract extension. He emphasized the team's belief in the duo's future and expressed optimism about their continued presence in Toronto.
Guerrero Jr., 25, has been having a phenomenal season, boasting a batting average of .291 along with 5 home runs and 26 RBIs. Bichette, 26, has also showcased his skills with a batting average of .241, hitting 4 home runs and driving in 25 RBIs. These impressive performances only strengthen the team's resolve in keeping them as core players in the coming years.
The Blue Jays currently find themselves tied for the last place in the American League East, 12½ games behind the leading New York Yankees. Despite the team's struggle, Atkins reassured fans that he is not rushing into making drastic changes, particularly regarding manager John Schneider.
"I just don't believe in changing [just] to change, or change for the sake of trying something different," Atkins shared. "We have to be better. I do not feel that John Schneider has been anything but part of the solution, and [he] will continue to be."
As the Blue Jays look to regroup and strengthen their position in the highly competitive American League East, it is clear that Atkins sees Guerrero Jr. and Bichette as integral parts of the team's future success. The ongoing dialogue regarding contract extensions highlights the team's commitment to building a long-lasting and talented roster.
Fans can rest assured that for now, the Blue Jays' standout players and their dedicated manager will remain with the team, working towards a brighter future both on and off the field.
