In a recent court filing obtained by Billboard, Michael Jackson's son, Blanket Jackson (now known as Bigi), requested a Los Angeles judge to halt his grandmother, Katherine Jackson, from using funds from the late singer's estate to finance her ongoing legal disputes against the estate's executors. Katherine is challenging a ruling from last year that granted co-executors John Branca and John McClain the authority to proceed with an undisclosed transaction, which is believed to be the estate's $600 million deal with Sony to sell part of Michael Jackson's catalog.
While Michael Jackson's other children accepted the judge's decision, blanked objected as his grandmother continued to fight the ruling, filing an appeal that is still pending. In December, Katherine filed motions demanding that the estate cover her legal expenses associated with her objection and the ongoing appellate case. However, Blanket argued that it would be unjust to burden him and his siblings with the cost of the appeal, especially since the chances of a successful reversal were considered highly unlikely.
Lawyers representing Bigi stated, "Given those odds, Bigi decided not to waste his resources to participate in an appeal. Nonetheless, Katherine has decided to appeal this court's ruling. That decision is not for the benefit of the heirs." Blanket did concede that the estate should pay for Katherine's legal bills concerning her initial opposition to the deal, as she presented important evidence about the transaction that benefitted all heirs and beneficiaries.
However, Blanket raised concerns about the total amount Katherine requested and questioned the need for hiring four lawyers at high hourly rates. He also argued against any estate payments for the ongoing appeal, referencing the previous ruling that permitted the deal to proceed as being well-reasoned and detailed.
It remains unclear how much Katherine is seeking, but in a recent court filing, Branca and McClain, the estate's executors, opposed any payments for her "failed objection" and "meritless appeal." Blanket's filing indicates that Katherine had requested over $561,548 to cover her legal expenses.
As of now, representatives for Katherine Jackson have not responded to requests for comment, while the Jackson estate has declined to comment on the matter. The judge will review Blanket Jackson's objections, and a decision will be made regarding the funding of Katherine's legal battle against Michael Jackson's estate.
