The Biden administration is set to unveil a substantial sanctions package against Russia later this week in response to the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny and Russia's actions in eastern Ukraine. White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby confirmed the upcoming sanctions, attributing Mr. Navalny's death to President Vladimir Putin and his government.

President Biden had previously warned Putin of devastating consequences if Navalny died in custody, and now plans to follow through with imposing sanctions on Russia. The sanctions are intended to hold Russia accountable not only for Navalny's death but also for its actions in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The US National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan, mentioned that the sanctions will target various elements of the Russian defense industry and revenue sources of the Russian economy. This move comes after a series of incremental sanctions against Russian officials and affiliated individuals following the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The announcement of the sanctions package is scheduled for Friday, and it is expected to be a significant step in imposing costs on Russia for its involvement in Navalny's death, conflict in Ukraine, and the perceived threat to international peace and security.
