The American Astronomical Society (AAS) has issued a warning about the influx of counterfeit and fake eclipse glasses flooding the market ahead of the upcoming solar eclipse on April 8. As the moon moves closer to the sun, viewers must exercise caution to ensure their safety.
Counterfeit eclipse glasses from China bearing the label "Mfg. by: American Paper Optics" are surfacing, tricking unsuspecting buyers with imitation products. Genuine eclipse glasses from American Paper Optics have been verified as safe by the AAS.
The AAS emphasizes that fraudulent and counterfeit glasses pose a severe risk to viewers, potentially causing eye injuries ranging from temporary vision impairment to permanent blindness. To protect themselves, consumers are urged to purchase eclipse glasses exclusively from vendors approved by the AAS.
Ahead of the eclipse, the AAS recommends three tests to determine the authenticity and safety of purchased glasses. Firstly, wear them indoors and ensure that no other objects are visible, except for bright lights which should appear faint. Secondly, observe your surroundings outside and verify that nothing is visible apart from the reflection of the sun on shiny surfaces or puddles, which should also be faint. Finally, gaze at the sun and if it is comfortably bright, the glasses pass the safety test.
The AAS's warning highlights the importance of verifying the legitimacy of eclipse glasses to prevent potential harm to viewers. It is crucial for anyone planning to view the upcoming solar eclipse to take the necessary steps to ensure their safety and protect their vision.
In addition to the warnings about counterfeit eclipse glasses, the AAS has also announced information about the upcoming penumbral lunar eclipse and the "Devil Comet." Stay tuned for further updates on these celestial events.
