In a stunning turn of events, Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson has officially requested a trade due to concerns over his contract. Sources close to the situation have confirmed that while the Bengals have expressed their intention to keep him, Hendrickson is determined to explore other options.

Hendrickson, who has two years remaining on his current deal, is scheduled to earn $14.8 million in 2024 and $15.8 million in 2025. However, neither year offers any guaranteed money, and both would count for over $18 million against the Bengals' salary cap.

Seeking more job security, Hendrickson is looking to either secure a new deal with the Bengals or find a new team that can offer him the desired financial stability. If the Bengals were to trade him before June 1, there would be a $7.8 million dead money hit but a cap savings of $12.3 million. On the other hand, a post-June 1 trade would result in a $5.2 million dead-money hit but cap savings of $15 million, according to Over the Cap.

Since joining the Bengals in 2021 after four seasons with the New Orleans Saints, the 29-year-old defensive end has emerged as a crucial player for the team. Hendrickson has earned Pro Bowl nods in each season with the Bengals, and his impressive performance includes a career-high 17.5 sacks last season, bringing his total to 39.5 sacks in the past three years—nearly double his output with the Saints.

This trade request marks the second high-profile name seeking an exit from the Bengals this offseason, following wide receiver Tee Higgins' trade request in March. Although Higgins has softened his stance since then, expressing his willingness to play out the 2024 season with the franchise, his desire for added security echoes Hendrickson's concerns.

Hendrickson's proven tenacity and skillset make him an attractive prospect for numerous teams and defensive schemes. If the Bengals fail to address his contract concerns, there is a strong likelihood that several suitors will emerge to acquire the talented defensive end.

As the situation unfolds, Bengals fans are left to ponder the uncertain future of one of their standout defensive players. It remains to be seen how the team will respond to Hendrickson's trade request and whether they can come to a resolution that satisfies both parties.
