In a much-anticipated return to the big screen, Beetlejuice is set to haunt movie theaters once again. The long-awaited sequel, "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Jenna Ortega, has already made quite the splash with $13 million in Thursday previews. With the summer season winding down, this horror-comedy is ready to inject some life into the box office, projected to open with an impressive $100 million to $110 million this weekend.
Warner Bros., however, is more cautiously predicting a slightly softer opening around $90 million. Box office experts, on the other hand, see the film surpassing the $100 million milestone. If predictions hold true, "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" could potentially join the ranks of September's biggest opening weekends, standing alongside menacing box office giants such as Pennywise the Clown from "It" ($123 million opening) in 2017 and "It: Chapter 2" ($91 million) in 2019.
Fans of the original "Beetlejuice" film, released in 1988, will be thrilled to know that Michael Keaton will reprise his role as the undead ghoul, bringing back the iconic character that terrified audiences over three decades ago. The original film, directed by Tim Burton, grossed an impressive $75 million with a modest $15 million budget, becoming the 10th highest-grossing movie of the year. It also received critical acclaim, winning an Academy Award for best makeup.
Joining Keaton and Ryder in "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" are Catherine O'Hara as Delia Deetz, and newcomer Jenna Ortega as Lydia's daughter, Astrid. The plot takes place 36 years after the events of the first film, where Lydia is now the host of a supernatural talk show and begins seeing visions of Beetlejuice haunting her. As a portal to the afterlife opens and unleashes Beetlejuice, the Deetzes must band together to prevent supernatural chaos from taking over.
The enduring popularity of "Beetlejuice" has spawned various adaptations and extensions, including a Tony-nominated Broadway musical and an animated series, cementing its status as a beloved cult classic. With a star-studded cast and an intriguing storyline, "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" promises to captivate audiences once again, inviting them into a world filled with dark humor and supernatural thrills.
As the weekend approaches, fans of the undead ghoul eagerly await the release of "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," ready to embark on a rollercoaster ride of nostalgia and new, spine-chilling adventures at the box office.
