Chicago Bears defensive back Douglas Coleman III was carried off the field on a stretcher during a preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday night. The incident occurred early in the third quarter when Coleman attempted to tackle Chiefs wide receiver Cornell Powell, resulting in a collision that left him injured.
After taking Powell's arm to his head, Coleman fell to the ground, prompting immediate concern from both teams' players and medical staff. The scene turned somber as players kneeled and medical personnel attended to Coleman, immobilizing him on a board and then placing him on a stretcher and a medical cart.
Fortunately, there was some positive news amidst the worrisome situation. Coleman was observed walking unassisted and was able to take a flight back to Chicago the following morning. He had undergone a comprehensive evaluation overnight at the hospital and was ultimately released.
Chicago Bears' head coach, Matt Eberflus, provided an update on Coleman's condition, stating that the defensive back had displayed movement in his limbs and even gave a thumbs-up to his teammates. Eberflus expressed his gratitude for this encouraging sign, stating, "That was really uplifting to our football team."
It is worth noting that Douglas Coleman III, 26, had previously played in the Canadian Football League during 2022 and 2023 before being signed by the Bears on a futures contract in January. While Coleman's injury is undoubtedly a setback, the team is hopeful for his swift recovery.
The preseason game against the Chiefs also saw several other Chicago Bears players being sidelined due to injuries. Offensive lineman Larry Borom suffered a right ankle injury during the offense's second drive and had to be carted off the field. Eberflus confirmed that Borom would undergo scans on his ankle the following day for further evaluation.
Additionally, wide receiver Nsimba Webster suffered a groin injury in the second quarter and had to be escorted off the field on a cart. Running back Ian Wheeler also sustained a knee injury, as stated by Eberflus. These injuries come at an unfortunate time as the Bears were looking to finalize their 53-man roster ahead of the regular season.
As the Bears reflect on their 4-0 preseason record, concerns arise regarding the health and availability of key players. With Coleman, Borom, Webster, and Wheeler facing recoveries, the team will need to reassess their depth chart and make the necessary adjustments for the upcoming weeks.
The Chicago Bears and their fans are sending their best wishes to Douglas Coleman III and the other injured players, hoping for a speedy recovery and their swift return to the field.
