San Francisco Giants and the baseball community mourn the loss of Orlando Cepeda, the iconic first baseman known as the "Baby Bull," who passed away at the age of 86. The Giants and his family announced his death, causing a moment of silence at Oracle Park during a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Cepeda's wife, Nydia, released a statement saying that he peacefully passed away at home while listening to his favorite music and surrounded by loved ones. The news of his passing comes just weeks after the death of another baseball legend, Willie Mays, who died at the age of 93.

Cepeda, one of the pioneering Puerto Rican players in the major leagues, was a regular presence at Giants home games until 2017 when health issues forced him to step back. He had been hospitalized in February 2018 following a cardiac event.

The first baseman's career spanned 17 years, during which he made a significant impact on the game. Notably, Cepeda became Boston's first designated hitter, a role that ultimately led to his induction into the Hall of Fame in 1999. His contribution to the game was acknowledged by Hall of Fame Chairman Jane Forbes Clark, who highlighted his love for baseball and his enduring legacy.

Cepeda's success as a designated hitter was a result of his ability to excel at the plate, even with knee issues that limited his performance in the field. His time as a DH allowed him to continue contributing to the game and showcased his talent as a hitter. In 1973, he had an outstanding season, hitting .289 with 20 home runs and 86 RBIs. Cepeda's achievements earned him the title of DH of the Year.

The news of Cepeda's passing brings a mix of sadness and admiration for his contributions to the sport. He was not only a remarkable player but also an ambassador for the game. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred acknowledged his impact, stating that Cepeda, along with other players of his era, helped transform baseball into a multicultural game.

Throughout his life, Cepeda faced both triumphs and challenges. His journey from Puerto Rico to the United States presented obstacles, including the language barrier. Nonetheless, he overcame these challenges and left an indelible mark on the sport.

Despite his successes, Cepeda also experienced personal struggles. In 2007, he was arrested for drug possession, a moment that tarnished his reputation. However, Cepeda's on-field achievements were recognized by the Veterans Committee, which elected him to the Hall of Fame in 1999.

Orlando Cepeda's legacy will forever be remembered in the world of baseball. His impact as a player, his love for the game, and his trailblazing path as a Puerto Rican star will continue to inspire future generations. As the baseball community mourns his death, his memory will live on in Cooperstown and in the hearts of fans worldwide.
