Austria showcased a remarkable performance at Euro 2024, defeating the Netherlands 3-2 and securing their spot in the last 16 as Group D winners. Despite being drawn alongside formidable opponents such as the Dutch and France, Ralf Rangnick's side displayed their quality by winning two out of three games, finishing at the top of the standings.

Although the Netherlands had already guaranteed their progression to the last 16, they will now move forward as one of the best third-placed teams, with France securing the second spot. Austria's victory was fully deserved, as they displayed exceptional spirit, determination, and resilience throughout the match.

The Austrians took an early lead in the sixth minute when Donyell Malen capitalized on Alexander Prass's dangerous cross. Although Malen had an opportunity for redemption, he scuffed his shot, allowing Austria to take control as the Netherlands struggled to maintain possession at times. Rangnick's side had multiple chances to extend their lead, with Marcel Sabitzer and Marko Arnautovic both threatening the Dutch defense.

However, the second half saw a resurgence from the Netherlands, as Cody Gakpo curled in a sensational finish just 75 seconds into the half, equalizing the score. The Dutch team increased their tempo, pressing Austria and forcing Virgil van Dijk's header to deflect over the bar. Nevertheless, Austria weathered the storm and regained the lead through Romano Schmid's powerful header, which unfortunately deflected off Stefan de Vrij and found the back of the net.

Memphis Depay appeared to have secured a draw for the Netherlands with his close-range volley, surviving a check for handball from the video assistant referee. However, it was Sabitzer who had the final say as he broke through the Dutch defense and fired a thunderous shot into the roof of the net, sending the Austrian fans into wild celebrations.

Rangnick's side has emerged as a surprise package in the tournament, but their pre-Euro 2024 form indicated that they should not be underestimated. Victory in their final two games of 2023 and triumphs in three of their four matches leading up to the tournament displayed their quality and potential.

While the Dutch are renowned for their attacking prowess, it was Austria who showcased remarkable tempo and precision in Berlin. Their constant running and movement often disrupted their opponents' defensive shape. To their credit, the Netherlands fought back twice to level the score, but it was Austria's never-say-die attitude that ultimately secured them a well-deserved victory.

After the final whistle, the Austrian fans stayed behind to applaud their team, demonstrating a strong sense of togetherness. Both the players and fans showcased unity that could potentially propel them to greater heights in Germany.

The Netherlands, on the other hand, acknowledged that they will need to raise their level of performance if they aim to replicate their European Championship success from 36 years ago. Aside from a brief 15-minute spell after half-time, their overall display fell below expectations, possibly due to the knowledge of their guaranteed progression. However, a positive for manager Ronald Koeman was the goal scored by striker Memphis Depay, who had previously struggled to lead the Dutch attack in earlier games.

The clash between Austria and the Netherlands served as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of Euro 2024, with surprising results and strong performances from unexpected teams.
