In a bold move to reinvigorate Auburn's lackluster offense, head coach Hugh Freeze has announced that he will be taking over the playcalling responsibilities for the upcoming season. Freeze admitted that relinquishing playcalling duties last season was uncomfortable for him and had an adverse impact on the team's performance.

Under former offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery, Auburn's offense struggled, finishing 11th in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in scoring, with an average of 26.2 points per game. The Tigers ended the season with a disappointing 6-7 record, prompting Freeze to make changes to turn things around.

Freeze expressed his concern about not having the answers that quarterback Payton Thorne needed, which further motivated him to take charge of the playcalling. By hiring longtime assistant Derrick Nix as the new offensive coordinator, Freeze aims to have a familiar face leading the offense while still maintaining the option to call plays himself.

The decision to call plays personally allows Freeze to have the comfort of knowing exactly what he wants to do in crucial situations. Although Nix is well-versed in Freeze's offensive system, Freeze believes that as the head coach, it is essential for him to have the ability to take control when necessary.

Echoing his coach's sentiments, Thorne, who transferred from Michigan State last year and started 12 games for Auburn, expressed his excitement about Freeze leading the offense. Thorne was frustrated last season when the offense did not align with Freeze's playcalling and the lack of communication hindered their effectiveness on the field.

With Freeze at the helm, Auburn's offense can expect a significant boost. Throughout his coaching career at Arkansas State, Ole Miss, and Liberty, Freeze's teams averaged an impressive 32.8 points and over 450 yards per game. Thorne is optimistic about the changes, stating that the offense will be more efficient and detail-oriented, with a strong emphasis on executing winning football strategies.

As the 2021 season approaches, Auburn fans eagerly anticipate witnessing the revitalized offense under Freeze's playcalling direction. With his proven track record and a renewed sense of control, Freeze aims to lead the Tigers to success, combining his expertise with Nix's experience to create a formidable offensive unit.

The Auburn community awaits the start of the season, hoping that the return of Freeze's playcalling magic will bring scoring prowess and an improved record to the Tigers.
