In a press conference held on Monday, Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small Sr. and his attorney, Ed Jacobs, addressed the media regarding search warrants served on the mayor and his wife, Atlantic City Schools Superintendent Dr. La'Quetta Small, late last week. The warrants were part of an investigation by the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office, which had been ongoing for at least three months, and were related to a "personal and emotional family matter within the Small household," according to Jacobs.
Mayor Small and his wife confirmed that they were aware of the investigation for several months, indicating that it stemmed from a private matter rather than official duties. Jacobs emphasized that it was highly unusual for search warrants to be issued in family matters, but in this case, it had been done.
During the press conference, Mayor Small also addressed rumors circulating about his daughter's alleged pregnancy and disturbing allegations that he had physically abused her resulting in a miscarriage. The mayor vehemently denied the rumors, stating that his daughter was not pregnant and condemning those who spread such false information. He warned that legal action would be taken against the individuals responsible.
Mayor Small's frustration and combative tone during the conference were evident as he questioned how reporters would feel if similar rumors were spread about their own children or family members. He emphasized the need for sensitivity and understanding in such situations.
Furthermore, Attorney Jacobs expressed that they were not ruling out the possibility of the investigation being politically or racially motivated. Mentioning past subpoenas served on the mayor's office earlier in the year, Small alluded to the notion that the scrutiny he faces may be fueled by political and racial bias. He highlighted his commitment to providing opportunities for minority individuals within City Hall and pledged to continue doing so without apology.
As the investigation into the "family matter" continues, Atlantic City residents and officials await further details and clarification from the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office. The mayor's strong denial of the rumors and his assertion that he and his wife are facing a personal and emotional challenge sheds light on the complex dynamics of public figures and their private lives.
