The Atlanta Hawks have made a major trade move, sending guard Dejounte Murray to the New Orleans Pelicans, as reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. The Pelicans, in turn, are trading a 2025 first-round pick (via the Lakers) and a potentially less-favorable Milwaukee/Pelicans 2027 first-round pick, along with Larry Nance Jr. and more, for Murray, per sources.

Murray, a 27-year-old guard, had an impressive performance last season, averaging 22.5 points, 6.4 assists, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.4 steals per game for the Hawks. This marked his eighth NBA season overall, with his second season in Atlanta following six seasons with the San Antonio Spurs.

In an effort to strengthen their backcourt, the Hawks had previously traded three first-round picks (2023, 2025, 2027) and engaged in a 2026 pick swap. The team sought to create a dynamic partnership between Murray and point guard Trae Young, who brings a more offensive-oriented playstyle. However, despite the high expectations, the team struggled to find success under their joint leadership.

The Hawks finished the 2022-23 season with a 41-41 record and were eliminated by the Boston Celtics in the first round of the NBA playoffs. The following season saw a downturn, with the team managing a disappointing 36-46 record and an immediate play-in tournament defeat.

Trade rumors surrounding both Murray and Young persisted throughout last year and into the offseason, as the Hawks desperately sought a breakthrough to establish a winning season. Ultimately, Murray's departure became inevitable, despite him signing a four-year, $114.1 million extension (including a 2027-28 player option) during the 2023 offseason.

Murray now joins the New Orleans Pelicans, a team anchored by standout players Zion Williamson and CJ McCollum. The arrival of Murray could potentially shake up the roster, as it raises questions about the future of Brandon Ingram, who has been linked to trade rumors and may find his days with the team numbered in the aftermath of this trade.

The trade between the Hawks and Pelicans signifies a significant shift in both teams' strategies, as they look to make necessary adjustments in pursuit of future success in the NBA.
