AT&T Raises Prices on Older Unlimited Plans, Offers More Data to Soften the Blow

In a recent announcement, AT&T revealed plans to impose monthly price hikes on users of older unlimited wireless plans starting in August 2024. The price increase will see a $10 per month rise for single-line plans and a $20 per month increase for plans with multiple lines.
AT&T clarified that the $10 and $20 price increases will affect the majority of their older unlimited plans. The company provided a list of the ten "retired" plans that will be subject to the price hike, including popular plans such as AT&T Unlimited & More Premium, AT&T Unlimited Choice Enhanced, and AT&T Unlimited Plus Enhanced.
To pacify customers impacted by the price increase, AT&T announced that it would offer more high-speed data and hotspot data to those who choose to stick with their older plans. Plans like AT&T Unlimited Choice, Choice II, Choice Enhanced, Unlimited & More, and Unlimited Value will now include 75GB of high-speed data and 30GB of hotspot data. Meanwhile, plans like AT&T Unlimited Plus, Plus Enhanced, Unlimited & More Premium, and AT&T Unlimited (with TV) will now come with 100GB of high-speed data and 60GB of hotspot data.
While AT&T's efforts to sweeten the deal with additional data are noteworthy, customers may still want to consider switching to one of AT&T's current unlimited plans for potentially better pricing. The current range of plans for a single line falls between $66 to $86, excluding taxes and fees. Notably, in 2019, the Unlimited & More plan cost $70 per month for a single line.
It is important to note that these price increases and data boosts are not applicable to AT&T's current plans. Customers considering a switch should take into account the limitations of the current plans. For instance, the entry-level plan, AT&T Unlimited Starter SL, priced at $66 for a single line, may experience temporary data speed reductions during peak network congestion. The mid-range offering, AT&T Unlimited Extra EL, priced at $76 for a single line, provides 75GB of smartphone data before the possibility of slowdowns. As for the high-end Unlimited Premium PL, costing $86 for a single line, it boasts no data slowdowns based on usage.
Furthermore, AT&T's move to raise prices on older plans follows a similar initiative by T-Mobile. However, the important distinction is that AT&T did not make a promise to never raise prices on these plans.
As customers evaluate their options, considering their personal usage requirements and budget, the looming changes by AT&T serve as a reminder for subscribers to stay informed and make choices that align with their needs.
