Apple has rolled out the second public betas of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1, offering non-developers an early opportunity to test the upcoming software versions before their official release in October. This release comes shortly after the software was made available to developers for testing purposes. Public beta testers enrolled in Apple's beta testing program can access these updates by navigating to the Settings app, selecting the Software Update section, and opting for the Public Beta option. Additionally, watchOS 11.1 and tvOS 18.1 betas are also accessible for public beta testers.
The latest betas introduce Apple Intelligence features, including Writing Tools, enhanced Siri functionalities, text summarization, AI-based Focus modes, and smart replies. These features are available to users with specific compatible devices such as the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 models, as well as M-series Mac or iPad devices. The Writing Tools feature provides functions like spell checking, grammar correction, text rewriting with different tones, and text summarization, allowing users to enhance their writing experience. Siri has been revamped with a new design, enabling users to type queries and maintain context between requests. Furthermore, Safari offers article summarization, and a new Focus Mode minimizes unnecessary notifications.
In terms of messaging enhancements, smart replies are now supported in Messages and Mail applications, prioritizing time-sensitive messages in the inbox. Users can also create Memory Movies in the Photos app based on text descriptions and utilize a Clean Up tool to remove unwanted objects from photos. Notably, iOS 18.1 users can now record and transcribe phone calls, with call summaries being an exclusive Apple Intelligence feature. Spatial photo capabilities have been extended to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models in this update. The new betas also introduce improved functionalities such as drag-and-drop file transfers between iPhone and Mac through an updated iPhone Mirroring feature, as well as the addition of a Control Center reset option and Camera Control icon for selfie shots on the iPhone 16 models.
