**Anthony Edwards Fined $35,000 for Obscene Gesture During Timberwolves' Overtime Win**
Anthony Edwards emerged as the hero in the Minnesota Timberwolves' thrilling overtime victory against the Sacramento Kings on Friday. However, his performance was overshadowed by a hefty fine imposed by the NBA. Edwards was penalized $35,000 for making an obscene gesture towards a fan during the game, as announced by the league on Sunday.
The incident occurred with 3 minutes and 15 seconds remaining in the first quarter when Edwards, 23, raised his middle finger to a fan after being called for a charge. Despite this, he significantly contributed to the Timberwolves' 130-126 win, notably sealing the game with a crucial jumper in overtime. Edwards led the team with 36 points, along with five rebounds and two assists, in this NBA Cup group-stage match.
This isn't the first time Edwards has faced financial penalties. Earlier in his career, he was fined $40,000 for criticizing officials in January, $50,000 for recklessly swinging a chair during the 2023 playoffs, and another $40,000 for using an anti-gay slur in a video posted on Instagram in September 2022. Additionally, Edwards is known for his profane language during media interactions, as evidenced in his postgame comments on Friday, although no fines have been reported for those instances yet.
The Timberwolves, holding a 7-6 record, are set to host the Phoenix Suns, who stand at 9-4, in their next game at 3:30 p.m. (ET) on Sunday. Their following NBA Cup group-stage face-off will be against the Houston Rockets on November 26.
