Former world No 1 tennis star Andy Murray has indicated that he is unlikely to continue playing tennis beyond this summer. The three-time Grand Slam champion expressed his intentions after securing a victory against Denis Shapovalov at the Dubai Open, marking his second win out of eight matches so far in 2024. Despite expressing doubts about his future in tennis, Murray remains hopeful of competing in the upcoming Olympics in Paris, scheduled to commence on July 27, shortly after Wimbledon. The 36-year-old, who claimed gold for Great Britain at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, expressed his desire to participate in another Olympic Games.
Following a defeat to Ugo Humbert in the second round of the Dubai Open, Murray reiterated his uncertainty about his future in the sport, stating, "I'm likely not going to play past this summer." The tennis veteran, known for his resilience and candid nature, acknowledged that retirement discussions have been a recurring topic throughout his career, expressing a desire to make a formal announcement before his last match and tournament. Murray, who underwent hip-resurfacing surgery in 2019, has enjoyed relative success since his return but has faced challenges in progressing past the third round of Grand Slam tournaments.
Reflecting on his potential retirement, Murray emphasized that there is no definitive formula for ending a career and noted the unique paths taken by other tennis greats like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. With three Grand Slam titles under his belt, including two victories at Wimbledon and one at the US Open, the upcoming Summer Olympics and the US Open, scheduled from August 26 to September 8, could potentially serve as pivotal moments in Murray's illustrious career. Additionally, the British tennis star may also feature in the Davis Cup later in September, further solidifying his legacy in the sport.
