**Demetrious Johnson Advises Kayla Harrison to Retire Following UFC Bantamweight Championship Win**
Kayla Harrison, now a UFC bantamweight champion, has been urged to retire while at the peak of her career. This advice comes unexpectedly from Demetrious Johnson, who believes facing Amanda Nunes would be a detrimental move for Harrison.
During his recent YouTube broadcast, Johnson, widely known as 'Mighty Mouse,' recommended that Harrison avoid the highly anticipated bout with Nunes. “If I was Kayla Harrison, I would retire from the sport,” Johnson remarked. He went on to add, "Don’t fight Amanda Nunes. Amanda is gonna... We’ll talk about that in the breakdown."
Johnson elaborated further on his reasons, highlighting the disparity in the competition each fighter has faced. According to him, the level of opponents Nunes has conquered far surpasses that of Harrison’s career. He stated, "Kayla Harrison is a world champion, but if you look at the roster of what Amanda Nunes fought and what Kayla Harrison has fought, there's no comparison."
Johnson expressed concerns that Nunes might be enticed to end her retirement solely due to the perceived ease of the fight against Harrison. “Amanda Nunes doesn’t need to come out of retirement,” Johnson said, advising that it would be preferable to see Nunes stay retired and Harrison perhaps fight once more before leaving the sport herself.
Amanda Nunes, who bowed out of MMA after her victory over Irene Aldana in June 2023 at UFC 289, aims to return to the ring to face Harrison. However, a significant obstacle could delay this potential matchup until 2026. Nunes has not participated in the UFC drug testing pool for the past two years, making December the earliest possible return date unless an exemption is granted.
As things stand, fans eager to witness a showdown between Harrison and Nunes might need to temper their expectations. For now, the MMA community is left to ponder whether Harrison will heed Johnson’s advice and exit the sport on a high note.
