In yet another tragic incident, an American tourist has been discovered dead on the small island of Mathraki in Greece. The body was found by another tourist on a beach near Mathraki's old port, according to the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency. This incident adds to the growing number of deaths and disappearances of tourists in Greece this summer.

The unidentified American tourist had been reported missing on Thursday, after being last seen alive at a tavern on Tuesday. He was accompanied by two female tourists who later left the island. The American was visiting Mathraki for a vacation and was staying with a Greek-American friend, who contacted the police after finding their home with the front door opened and the lights and air-conditioning turned on, but no sign of the missing tourist or their identification and travel documents.

Mathraki, a small island with a population of about 100 people, is heavily wooded and lacks its own coast guard or police station. As a result, law enforcement from the neighboring island of Corfu had to be called in to assist with the investigation. A coroner is set to travel to Mathraki on Sunday to conduct a preliminary investigation, after which the body will be transported to Corfu for an autopsy, as reported by ABC News.

This unfortunate incident marks the third tourist death on Greek islands in recent weeks. Last Sunday, British TV personality Dr. Michael Mosley was found dead on the island of Symi. The coroner determined that he had died four days earlier while on a hike in hot conditions across rocky terrain.

In another incident, a 74-year-old Dutch tourist was found dead on Samos after being located by a fire service drone. He was found facedown in a ravine, approximately 1,000ft away from where he was last seen struggling to walk in the heat.

The concerns of tourist safety in Greece have escalated further as three other tourists still remain missing on separate islands. Albert Calibet, a 59-year-old retired Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy from Hermosa Beach, California, was reported missing after failing to return from a hike on the island of Amorgos. Similarly, two French tourists, aged 73 and 64, were reported missing on the island of Sikinos in the Aegean Sea after leaving their hotels to meet up.

As investigations continue and authorities intensify their search efforts, the incidents highlight the need for enhanced safety measures and awareness for tourists exploring the Greek islands.
