### American Freight Shutting Down All Michigan Stores Amid Bankruptcy
American Freight is set to close all 15 of its Michigan locations as part of a nationwide shutdown, with liquidation sales already in progress. The closures come after the parent company, Franchise Group Inc., filed for bankruptcy.
The company announced that its decision was driven by persistent inflation and broader economic challenges affecting the large durable goods sector. A total of 328 American Freight stores, including six in Metro Detroit, will be closed, along with the chain’s online store.
Customers can take advantage of the liquidation sales, which offer discounts of up to 30% off the lowest ticketed prices storewide. The sales include a wide variety of items such as living room sets, bedroom furniture, dining tables, as well as scratch & dent and new in-box appliances like refrigerators, washers, and dryers.
Despite the closures, American Freight will continue to offer select financing and delivery services during the liquidation sales.
Founded in 1994, American Freight expanded significantly when it merged with former Sears Surplus and Sears Outlet stores in 2020. The chain employed approximately 2,000 people as of 2022.
