American Airlines Flight Attendants Union Calls for Strike Amid Failed Contract Negotiations
In a recent development, the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA), which represents flight attendants for American Airlines Group Inc, has urged its members to prepare for strike action. This comes after contract negotiations between the union and the carrier failed to reach an agreement.
According to a statement released by APFA, the two parties remain apart on the key economic aspects of the deal. Additionally, the union expressed its concern over the "completely unacceptable demand for scheduling concessions" put forth by the company.
The negotiations are currently being overseen by the National Mediation Board (NMB), who APFA believes will bring the parties together for a last-ditch effort within the next two weeks. However, American Airlines and the NMB have not provided any immediate response or comment regarding the matter outside of regular business hours.
The urgency to resolve these contract disputes extends beyond American Airlines. Lawmakers are pressuring the NMB to take steps in assisting approximately 80,000 flight attendants from different airlines, including United Airlines, Alaska Air Group, American Airlines, and Frontier, in reaching new contract agreements.
It remains uncertain how this potential strike action will impact American Airlines and its operations. The airline industry has been severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and any disruption to flights could further strain the recovery efforts.
As the negotiations continue, both the flight attendants' union and American Airlines will be closely watched to see if they can find common ground and avoid a potential strike that could lead to further complications for the airline and its passengers.
